Madhya Pradesh, a major state in central India, has preserved historical landmarks from many periods in Indian history. The Hindu and Jain temples of Khajuraho, which date from the 10th century, are known for their carvings of sensual themes, the most famous of which is Kandariya Mahadeva, a temple with over 800 sculptures. Guided safaris are available in the eastern Bandhavgarh and Kanha national parks, which are well-known Bengal tiger sanctuaries.
